Switch has many friends now, despite starting out alone. The Nintendo Switch OLED, which has a brighter screen and a redesigned dock design, and the Nintendo Switch Lite are now only available for smaller, handheld games. However, there is still room for the entry-level Switch, and there will likely always be until we get the full Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch OLED review: Great system, but maybe not for upgrades

Advantages and disadvantages of Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo Switch (Blue) costs $295.99 on Amazon.

Considering that Sony and Microsoft recently announced their next generation PS5 and Xbox Series X platforms, this could be a difficult period for Nintendo. But it looks like the Switch won't have a problem with Sony and Microsoft's transition to the next console generation thanks to blockbuster hits like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, remastered versions of classics like the recently released Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and a growing number of games. Third parties from developers big and small, plus completely original experiences like Nintendo Labo or Mario Kart Live.

Nintendo Switch price and availability

Nintendo Switch was first introduced in March 2017; An updated model followed in July 2019. List price is $299.99 (£279.99), and it comes with either gray Joy-Con controllers or red and blue Joy-Con controllers. Even during major promotions, Switch consoles rarely see big price cuts, but you can sometimes find them with a few dollars or pounds off when bundled with one or more titles. In contrast, the Switch Lite is less expensive at $199.99 (£199.99) and offers a variety of pastel color options for the entire system. The Nintendo Switch OLED is available in black and white only for $349 (£309).

Due to limited supplies, it can be difficult to buy a Nintendo Switch at times. To help you find the best deal, we're tracking down the best Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals. For $299, Best Buy, for example, is offering a great Nintendo Switch bundle that includes the console, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and a 3-month subscription to the online service.

In the US, you can buy the Switch at Amazon US, Best Buy, GameStop, Target (opens in a new tab), and Walmart. In the UK, you can buy the Switch from Amazon, Argos, Game, Currys or the Nintendo Store

Nintendo also sells a few limited edition Switches with unique designs, like the one below with the Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme.

The Switch has seen an increase in demand over the past 18 months as individuals around the world have searched for new pastimes amid national lockdowns. We've got a guide on where to buy a Nintendo Switch if you're still having trouble finding a console that's in stock and hasn't been overpriced by distributors, though stock shortages are pretty much over at this time.

Nintendo Switch design

Like the majority of contemporary game consoles, the Nintendo Switch has an unimpressive look: rectangles punctuated by some gentle curves, all rendered in matte plastic. You can choose between an all-gray version, which gives the console a more symmetrical look, and a neon color option, which gives the blue and red Joy-Con controllers more flair. In any case, the gray rectangle with the screen in its center serves as the focal point for the switch.

The dock, which by default is an uninspiring rectangle of black plastic, is much more interesting than its exterior might suggest. There is a hole for the adapter to slide into. It has a hidden USB Type-C connector as well as a jack for the AC adapter. Three USB ports and an HDMI output for connecting to your monitor or TV are located on the side and back of the dock, respectively, and they're protected by a molded-in cover to keep cables organized. (To discover the perfect Switch compatibility, check out our picks for the best gaming TVs.)

Mechanically, though, the Switch is very nimble. The console functions as a large portable device when the Joy-Cons are attached to its side rails. Joy-Cons can also be removed and used independently in tabletop mode. You can lay the key flat or rest it on its built-in stand when you play this way. The console can also be used in TV mode, which allows you to play your games on a different screen by installing it in the dock provided.

The portability of the controller is very useful, but it's the only way you can play your games in the highest resolution of 1080p (in handheld mode, the defaults are 720p). It's how I frequently play with other Switch gamers. Nintendo's latest Switch Lite console can't connect to a TV at all due to the prevalence of handheld mode.

The console's physical media are game cards that you place in a protected slot on top of the system. On the top edge of the Switch are the power button, a 3.5mm port for speakers or headphones, and the volume rocker.

The console's 4,310mAh internal battery receives power through a USB Type-C charging connector on the bottom, either directly from the included power adapter or indirectly through the docking station, and can be fully charged in about three hours. You can increase storage space for downloaded games by inserting a microSD card by raising the kickstand on the back of the console.

Nintendo Switch specifications

The Switch is this generation's smallest and lightest main console, measuring 4 x 9.4 x 0.55 inches (10.1 x 23.8 x 1.3 cm) and weighing 0.88 pounds (about 400 grams) with the Joy-Cons attached. The built-in display is a 720p touchscreen LCD panel, and an Nvidia-designed Tegra CPU handles the processing.

Both Joy-Con controllers use rechargeable batteries, with an average life expectancy of 20 hours and a charging time of 3.5 hours, respectively. Joy-Cons can be charged by attaching them to a variety of specially designed accessories, most of which are sold separately, or into the side rails of the Switch's main console. A single Joy-Con stand, which is similar to a typical controller in appearance and feel, is provided with the system.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are more powerful than the Nintendo Switch, but not the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X. However, the Switch does not need to equal the graphics prowess of the competition in order to attract gamers due to its well-known exclusive franchises and distinct gameplay opportunities.

Joy-Cons are just as adaptable as the console itself. For local co-op and multiplayer, you can use it as two halves of a single gamepad or flip them over to use them as separate controllers (no shoulder buttons).

The Joy-Cons each have an accelerometer and gyroscope for motion control as well as an HD Rumble for in-game feedback. However, the Joy-Con proper has an additional IR sensor to control certain games as well as an NFC sensor for Nintendo's Amiibo figurines. This enables additional content in certain games.

A few extras are included in the box with the controllers. This includes shoulder buttons that are more comfortable if you're using a single controller, as well as Joy-Con straps that slide along the sides of the controllers to give you a firmer grip when using motion controls.

Another option is the Joy-Con Grip, which turns both controllers into a shape more akin to a gamepad. For gamers who are used to using Xbox or PlayStation consoles, this may come in handy. However, despite spending most of this console generation playing on the PlayStation 4, I rarely use the Grip. The Joy-Cons are surprisingly comfortable to use on their own.

There are many other original ways to play with the Switch, proving that Nintendo sure loves accessories. Create pre-made, original creations with Joy-Con controllers or the Switch console itself with Labo cardboard-based games. Additionally, Mario Kart Live allows you to use the Switch to drive real go-karts around your house.

Nintendo Switch: Online and Multiplayer

You must be a member of Nintendo Switch Online to play first-party Nintendo games online (such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), back up your games to the cloud, play NES and SNES games, or Use the smartphone app format.

There are many distinct features with Switch Online. Only select games offer cloud saves, but you don't have to pay extra for multiplayer per game. Additionally, since the console itself cannot support online voice chat, a smartphone app is required.

Nintendo Switch Online costs $3.99 per month, $7.99 for three months, and $19.99 for a year. There's also a fourth "Family" option available for $34.99 per month, which covers up to eight Nintendo accounts in the same household.

There is no membership fee if you only intend to use your Switch for local multiplayer. For intense local multiplayer matches, you can connect up to eight Switch consoles together as well as pair up to four Joy-Cons to a single system.

A data breach in April 2020 that affected approximately 160,000 Switch users enabled online thieves to use accounts without two-factor authentication (2FA) to conduct unauthorized transactions. If you are an owner who believes you may have been affected, contact Nintendo Support so they can look into any suspicious activity on your account. Make sure to enable 2FA on your account from the Settings menu if you are planning to purchase a key or have just done so.

Game library for Nintendo Switch

Games can be downloaded from the Nintendo eShop or purchased as physical game cards.

The Switch has 32GB of internal storage, which is fine for some games if you want to download them. However, if you want a big collection, you'll either need to use the microSDHC or microSDXC card slot or rely on physical games, which use less space (but still take up a fraction) on the Switch's hard drive.

Nintendo's line of video games includes some of the most popular franchises in gaming history. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild saga was one of the most memorable of the original releases. Nintendo released Super Mario Odyssey, an exhilarating platformer, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Ultimate, and the monster-catching RPGs Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, as well as planned new releases of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, in quick succession.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Overwatch, Doom (2016), Crysis Remastered, and most recently Apex Legends are some of the other notable games not produced by Nintendo. Plus, the Switch is home to a solid indie game library that includes titles like Celeste and Untitled Goose Game. In our list of the best Switch games, you can learn more about these favorites and more titles.

You can take full advantage of Nintendo's vast game library by subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online, as already announced. This gives you access to old NES and SNES games. The Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection that includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy is an example of how Nintendo occasionally releases digital and boxed conversions of its classic titles. It's a great opportunity to bring back the nostalgia or to give them a shot if you missed the original.

Nintendo Switch battery life

Nintendo expects the Nintendo Switch (model number HAC-001) to last between 2.5 and 6.5 hours, but the updated model (model number HAC-001 (-01)), which can be distinguished from the original by its all-red packaging, managed 4.5 to 9 hours operation is much more. Battery life is the only difference between the two console models, so if you want the best Switch experience, be sure to buy it right away.

The Switch's battery life seemed to live up to Nintendo's claims in our testing. The Switch lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes of playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Ultimate game before the console shut down, while the updated Switch made it 4 hours and 50 minutes. For reference, the Switch Lite was made to 3:50 points. This test only serves to confirm that the new Switch and Switch Lite are superior to the original Switch, though all three versions of the Switch will run for a respectable amount of time on a full battery charge.

Switch OLED vs. Nintendo Switch

You may be debating whether to upgrade from the current Switch or whether to buy the Switch OLED now that it was recently launched instead of the original model. You can read a detailed comparison of the Nintendo Switch OLED vs the Original Switch here, but we'll give you a quick rundown here.

The OLED model of the Switch is probably the best option if you don't own one before. A larger, better-quality built-in display, longer battery life, useful dock and kickstand improvements, and double the amount of base storage are included for $50 more. However, these aren't enough if you currently hold a switch to make you want to upgrade.

Also keep in mind that if all you want is a new dock with an Ethernet port, you can purchase it separately and use it with an old switch.

Verdict on Nintendo Switch review

In 2017, the Nintendo Switch got off to a really strong start, and it's only gotten better since then. Nintendo responded to many of the console's launch-day criticisms with a new, affordable form factor in the Switch Lite, improved battery life in the updated 2019 model, and most recently an OLED release with a larger, brighter screen. Non-Nintendo developers demand their games appear on the platform.

If you want to play on Switch rather than a competing platform, you'll have to put up with a loss in graphic power. In addition, Nintendo's online service may inadvertently mislead users into purchasing it when it is unnecessary or not useful for the titles they play. It's also bad that Nintendo doesn't save much on sales. The Switch rarely goes on sale, and when it does, it usually sells out very quickly.

Due to the high build quality and exclusive game privileges associated with the company, a large number of Switch gamers made the decision to purchase the console as soon as they learned that it was a Nintendo product. However, the Switch offers one of the most extensive collections of third-party games ever on a Nintendo device. Even if you don't like Nintendo's first-party games, the chance to play your favorite RPG, shooter, or strategy game on a mobile platform is tempting. The Switch is among the best mobile gaming devices available because of these factors.
